  • A great First time, having moved from Charlotte, NC where we attended Elevation church we were a bit concerned coming to the NW. However what a friendly and exciting church. We wished our children were younger the kids place with the "slide-on-in" entrance is beyond cool!! The only suggestion would be to have the coffee bar open for some time after the 11:00 service, it allows newbe's like us and others to mingle a bit, that was a real welcomed event at Elevation.

The first few visits were good and I related to the sermons and the music, but after that, things were getting pretty far off. One of the pastors, Larry, gave a sermon that was very aggressive in energy and it felt unsettling while listening to him, and I sensed he was trying to evoke his power rather than relating to the people. I've had some interesting conversations with some of the members and staff in person, many emails from the church but no email replies. After observation, it's clear that a number on staff are steered toward our current government and emulate it. I went to the Inspire conference where there was a talk about homosexuality and I always like to hear the perspective before I say something. This church, like a number of traditional churches are simply not following biblical law on this area of acceptance and still believe in discriminating against this group of people and women. In 2017, I'm not sure why except for the inability to get away from certain scripture in the bible. It's not the first time I've seen this though, but it was the way a number of white men acted towards me at the conference when I stood up to ask a question of the presenter. Biblical scripture is quite clear on this topic about what God's highest law is. God's highest law is to Love Your Neighbor as yourself. The man who brought the microphone to me didn't want to let me hold it and didn't want to let me talk or even challenge this presenter. The presenter mentioned that no, the highest law is to love God. Actually, it's both. In response to the fact that I was going to challenge him, the white male man walked away from me with the microphone to let the presenter have the last word. He then continued on trying to tell the audience that it is appropriate to discriminate, which I thought was highly inappropriate for a church to allow. The sad part, the audience was going along with it. I respectfully walked out because I was not going to encourage this inside a church. So, there were two problems here, how the church handled this group of people and how this church (or a group of white males) handle women or women who speak. I've seen this before, usually with white men. Later in another breakout session, I noticed the lead pastor, Steve, behind me, much like our current government leader stood behind his opponent in a debate. It was not a comfortable or safe moment. Luckily the presenter of this particular teaching, Jere, was very welcoming. He was a white male that could teach this church well. He made it easier to ask questions and be valued, which I appreciated. Otherwise, I'm surprised at the right leaning slant, the need for popularity, and slighting of people. Steve remarked once that he couldn't have people around him that didn't come from a good family (I suspected that might alluded to those who are not married, are divorced, or have a non-traditional background), and I had to breathe and take his comments as a grain of salt being a well educated and sound woman. The church was using some of my business ideas and it was clear to me that stealing ideas and claiming credit was something that didn't seem unbiblical to them. So, after a hopeful beginning, it turned off for me. Tyler's testimony on Easter was beautiful but it was cut off by Steve needing the stage and popularity.
So, I'm disappointed in the ego and pride by this experience and disrespecting women. I am a biblical teacher, so I don't say this without serious thought, but I think it's time that some of these men start looking at their own behavior and make some sincere apologies and changes. I think this church is focusing to much on the patriarchy rather than equality and Christ, and this is so far behind the current times that growing up in Indiana 20 years ago had better respect of women and girls. Time to move forward.

Two bit Christian music service. Meetings in tongues? Give me a break.!
Why don't you spend more time counseling your members about what it's about to be a human. Help, be sympathetic especially about their own family!!

  • For being such a large church, Pastor Steve makes you feel welcomed. Before each service, he makes an approach to speak with new attendees.
